Indian automaker’s strategic move to introduce a petrol powerplant aims to enhance accessibility and competitiveness.
Tata Motors, the renowned Indian automaker, has officially confirmed its plans to introduce a 1.5-litre TGDi 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine for its popular Harrier and Safari SUVs. This news comes shortly after the launch of the updated Harrier and Safari, which are currently available with a 2.0-litre diesel engine.
The 1.5-litre TGDi engine, initially showcased at Auto Expo 2023, is expected to bring more versatility to Tata’s SUV lineup. This turbocharged petrol powerplant boasts a remarkable output of 168 BHP and 280 Nm of torque, providing a promising alternative to the existing diesel engine. Drivers can expect a smooth and responsive performance from this new engine.
This move to incorporate a petrol engine aligns with Tata’s strategy to cater to a broader range of customers and offer more competitive pricing. Presently, the Harrier’s pricing starts at Rs 15.49 lakh, while the Safari is priced from Rs 16.19 lakh (ex-showroom). The addition of a petrol powertrain is likely to make these SUVs more accessible to prospective buyers who prefer petrol engines or seek a more budget-friendly option.
Several competing brands, including Mahindra, MG, and Hyundai, have already introduced petrol versions of their mid-size SUVs, recognizing the growing demand for petrol-powered vehicles. The Mahindra Scorpio-N and XUV700 come equipped with a potent 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, while MG Hector features a 1.5-litre unit. Hyundai’s Alcazar also offers a 2.0-litre petrol engine option, showcasing the industry’s trend toward providing diversified powertrain options to cater to a wide array of preferences.
This upcoming addition of a 1.5L turbo-petrol engine to the Tata Harrier and Safari is expected to strengthen the brand’s position in the competitive mid-size SUV segment and broaden the choices available to Indian customers. Enthusiasts and potential buyers can anticipate an exciting and diverse range of options when this new engine becomes available.
