A User’s Review of the Toyota RAV4 GR SPORT

Toyota RAV4 2024

Having craved a car that blended everyday practicality with a touch of driving excitement, I opted for the Toyota RAV4 GR SPORT eight months ago. With nearly 12,000 kilometers under my belt, I’m here to share my experiences – exploring its features, specifications, running costs and how it fares as a daily driver.

Features:

The GR SPORT builds upon the standard RAV4, adding a sporty touch. The exterior boasts a more aggressive look with a redesigned front grille, 19-inch black alloy wheels, and subtle GR SPORT badging. The interior features sport seats with red stitching and a GR SPORT steering wheel, creating a more engaging driving environment.

Technology-wise, the GR SPORT comes well-equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a comprehensive safety suite including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring.

Specifications:

The GR SPORT retains the standard RAV4’s 2.5L hybrid powertrain, offering a healthy 218 horsepower and a respectable fuel efficiency of around 5.5 liters per 100 kilometers (51 mpg) on a combined cycle. While not a full-blown performance SUV, the hybrid system delivers adequate power for daily driving, with the electric motor providing a smooth and responsive feel in city commutes.

The GR SPORT comes with a unique suspension setup, offering slightly sharper handling compared to the standard RAV4. While not a night-and-day difference, the firmer suspension provides a more engaging driving experience, especially on winding roads.

Toyota RAV4 Running Costs in the UK:

The hybrid powertrain is undoubtedly a major advantage in terms of running costs. The combination of fuel efficiency and Toyota‘s reputation for reliability translates to lower fuel bills and potentially lower maintenance costs in the long run. Additionally, the RAV4 GR SPORT benefits from the UK government’s plug-in car grant, offering a financial incentive for purchasing a hybrid vehicle.

Daily Driving Experience:

The RAV4 GR SPORT excels as a daily driver. Its comfortable cabin, spacious interior, and ample cargo space make it perfect for running errands, commuting to work, or taking weekend trips. The hybrid system ensures a smooth and quiet ride, while the added features like the panoramic sunroof and heated seats enhance the overall driving experience.

However, it’s important to note that the GR SPORT isn’t a sports car. While the slightly sharper handling is a welcome addition, it doesn’t drastically alter the RAV4’s core character. If you prioritize outright performance, other options in the market might be more suitable.

Verdict:

The Toyota RAV4 GR SPORT delivers a compelling package for UK drivers seeking a blend of everyday practicality and a hint of sporty flair. The hybrid powertrain offers excellent fuel efficiency and lowers running costs, while the subtle performance upgrades enhance the driving experience without compromising comfort or practicality.
